Tast del Decenni of 2007 DO Montsant

Following are the tastings notes for the 2007 DO Montsant wines. Please read my reflections on this tasting and the vintage as a whole first. Not that while I’m quite happy normally using my three star scoring system, I’ve opted for the 100 point scale as a more finite system is needed for tasting such as these.

Pascona – “Clàssic”
Light dark cherries, hit of vanilla at the bottom of it, light nail polish, seemingly lingering notes of Cab Sauvignon. Crisp red fruits on the palate, medium high acidity, and showing relatively few tertiary notes. Fruit quite strong still.
60% Grenache, 35% Carignan, 5% Cab Sauvignon 89

Coca i Fitó – Negre
Quite plump dark plumbs, cloves, tar, bit of earthiness. Good weight on the palate and wholeness but a bit short in the finish and with a bit of volatility.
50% Carignan, Grenache, Syrah 89

Alfredo Arribas – Tros Negre
Mostly just aldehydes with a nail polish character and thin fruit, light herbal tones at the fringe of it. Full and voluminous on the palate, still a good wealth of tannins, length in the finish. Would be a fine wine if not for the aromatic die off.
100% Grenache 86

El Masroig – Les Sorts Vinyes Velles
Cedar, cigar, light red fruits, alcohol a bit prevalent in the nose. Quite full and tannic in the body with fruit a bit thin at this point and a raspy, uneven finish.
Carignan, Grenache 84

Venus la Universal – la Venus
Wild herbs and red fruits, cherry and young plum, dark cherry, but with a dollop of brett that’s threatening to destabilize the whole thing. Good weight in the body, rich, full on the palate with a good, lingering finish that still shows a good degree of primary fruit.
60% Carignan, 30% Syrah, 20% Grenache 90

Vinyes Domènech – Teixar
Very light aromatically, very upright herbal notes, minor minerality and dark fruits. Full on the mouth albeit thin in the middle with quite strident and marked acidity in the finish. [Really seems to carry a bit of Cab Sauvignon despite stated to be a varietal wine of Hairy Grenache.]
100% Hairy Grenache 87

Portal del Montsant – Sant Bru
Lightly marked by the brett, dark fruits, bit of mushroom, and light toasted notes still, lacking full barrel integration. Good deal of primary fruit still holding on, but quite rigid and blocky in the mouth with a short finish.
Carignan, Grenache, Syrah 84

Sant Rafel – Solpost
Dark and red cherry notes, light mineral notes, and a touch of volatility, tea leaves. Fruit still present but fully hollow in the mid palate with a shorter finish dominated by the tannins.
50% Grenache, 35% Carignan, 15% Cab Sauvignon 87

Celler de Capçanes – Cabrida
Lightly stewed dark fruit, seemingly more Carignan to it, tar, cedar verging on sawdust. Full red fruits on the body, good balance and lush across the palate and through the finish, long finish. [Easily the biggest surprised given how variable I’ve found recent vintages.]
100% Grenache 91
