Tast del Decenni of 2007 DOQ Priorat

Following are the tastings notes for the 2007 DOQ Priorat wines. Please read my reflections on this tasting and the vintage as a whole first. Not that while I’m quite happy normally using my three star scoring system, I’ve opted for the 100 point scale as a more finite system is needed for tasting such as these.

Mas d’en Compte – Blanc
Leesy with strident lemon pith notes, light almond nuttiness, pleasing oxidative notes with a pinch of dried flowers. Rather flat on the mouth and lacking any and all intensity with just minor tertiary notes trailing in to the finish.

Gran Clos – Blanc
Tart green pear, dried green apple, bit of tar and rubber notes along with young hazelnut. Fresh lemon zest and still quite strong acidity that is pushing the wine along although the rubbery notes stick a bit in the finish. Still very much alive and maturing.
60% White Grenache 40% Macabeu 88

Hildalgo Albert – 1270
Fresh red cherry and cranberry notes, still quite juicy. Touch of sage, fennel, and wild herbs. Slight bit dense on the palate but still very well integrated, clean, and maintaining freshness despite the age.
40% Grenache, 20% Carignan, 15% Cab Sauvignon, 15% Syrah 90

Mas d’en Gil – Clos Fontà
Light tar and licorice along with dark and red cherry notes, and a little bit of reduction at the edges. Medium minus intensity in the body with a decent degree of tannic strength, still a bit light in the finish.
70% Grenache, 20% Carignan, 10% Cab Sauvignon 86

Ametller – Els Igols
Dark cherries, earth, bit of currant and plum, Frenchy notes speak out, dried herbs, tobacco, and light toasted notes along with rather forceful fruit still. Plum and ripe fruit in the body although the tannic structure is getting a quite thin and shows a bit of VA.
60% Grenache, 15% Carignan, 25% Cab Sauvignon & Merlot 83

Mas Alta – Creu Alta
Potent fruit notes, prune, cocoa, bit of violet, seemingly Carignan [as tasted blind]. Bit overripe. Still very good acidity in the body, strong, leading tannins, and good integration as well.
85% Carignan, 15% Grenache 90

Clos del Portal – Somni
Light red cherry with a rather big whap of balsamic notes, stony mineral notes, bit of reduction and volatility. Quite soft tannins in the mouth, more chocolate and coffee notes prevalent as well as mushroom character.
50% Carignan, 50% Syrah 88

Mas Sinén – Coster
Aromatically quite light, crisp red cherry notes, alcoholic kirsch notes prevalent. Plump red fruit with a good deal of youthful tartness to it and general freshness. Crisp finish of decent length.
50% Grenache, 40% Carignan, 10% Cab Sauvignon 89

Gran Clos – Cartus
Light red cherry with a bit of rubbery notes along with tea leaves, tobacco, and a bit of chocolate. Fresh and lively in the mouth, still holding a good amount of primary fruit, good intensity and length.
75% Grenache, 25% Carignan 91

Álvaro Palacios – Clos Dofí
Bit animal with touches of leather and brett, good upright fruit, red and dark cherry notes, minor minerality. Plump, ripe fruit in the mouth, more prune notes comes through as well as some raisiny bits. Good persistence but the alcoholic notes remain quite prevalent and dominate.
55% Grenache, 25% Cab Sauv, 20% Syrah 85

Mas Martinet – Clos Martinet
Quite ripe red fruit notes that are verging on overripe and potent, more than a hint of reduction. Fine and well-structured tannins in the mouth but a bit hollow in the mid palate, with rather low persistence in the finish.
60% Grenache, 18% Carignan, 18% Syrah, 4% Others 84

Joan Simó – Les Eres
Dominated by brett, knocking out the ripe red cherry fruit in the nose. Mineral notes hanging on but the alcohol is quite prevalent. Surprisingly well-formed tannins in the mouth give a bit of freshness to it. Fermentation was possibly spontaneous and ran a bit too hot as there’s a decent wine in it that has died aromatically.
65% Carignan, 25% Hairy Grenache, 10% Cab Sauvignon 83

Mas Doix – Mas Doix
Ripe dark cherry, minor minerality, alcoholic notes, kirsch, and a bit of rubber. Fine tannins but a bit overpowering in the body, alcohol still rides through and acidity is too light.
55% Carignan, 45% Grenache 88

Clos Mogador – Clos Mogador
Quite reductive, rather light dark fruit, minor dried herbs. Light minerality and lacking in aromatic intensity. Light and thin on the palate with oxidative notes more present but a lingering finish.
40% Grenache, Carignan, Cab Sauvignon, Syrah 85

Merum Priorati – Osmin
Very ripe, pruney fruit, very juicy and raisiny, dried apple blossoms. Very direct, smells more like a 2012 than 2007. Confected on the palate with a strand of sweetness that dominates the rather stewed fruits.
70% Carignan, Grenache, Cab Sauvignon, Merlot 83

Vall Llach – Vall Llach
Good degree of balsamic notes, plum currant and plum notes, lacking any cherry notes indicating a rather high predominance of French varieties. Bit cloying in minerality. Bigger on the palate with a good degree of sweet, dark fruit.
