Wall Street Journal on Croatian Wines

That still-functioning bastion of Rupert Murdoch, the Wall Street Journal had a small overview snippet on Croatian wines today. The author, Will Lyons surmised:

My first impressions are favorable. The whites I tasted showed real individuality, and Malvazija provides a welcome alternative to those tired of drinking Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. I was also impressed with the restrained take on well-know varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Alcohol levels are high, so too are prices, which I suspect reflect the scale of the operations, which are small.

He’s one of the few that points out the rather large price barrier in Croatian wines currently, which is a shame as the cost per bottle has been steadily rising over the years and while more people are being turned on to the wines, a lot are being turned off as they’re costing more than higher-end California wines now. Otherwise a good article that lightly touches on a couple of the newer winemakers in the area.
